How many cloth diapers do I need?

The amount of cloth diapers you need depends on the type of diapers you choose to use, how often you want to wash, and how much your baby wet and poos.  Most commonly, you will need 12-15 diapers a day for newborns, and 8-10 diapers a day for babies 4 months and older.  If you have an extremely high wetter, you will want to get more, or buy a pocket diaper where you can increase absorbancey by adding inserts.

What other supplies do I need?

If you are using pocket diapers, inserts are needed to make them absorbant (Happy Heiny's one size come with one small and one large insert per diaper, but you can buy extras if needed).
You will need diaper covers if you are using
fitted diapers, or prefolded diapers. Diaper covers can be reused as long as they are not soiled, since they are just an outer waterproof layer. A good number of covers are about 6 so that you always have a couple extra handy. You can let them air dry between uses.
You will also need
cloth diaper wipes. It just makes sense to throw the diaper and the wipes into the same place instead of putting them in tow different places. It also saves money and is better for the environment. The amount of wipes you will need is about twice as many as the amount of diapers.  I would be delighted to sell you my wipes, but I will also tell you that you can cheat and go buy the baby washclothes from the store, they work just as well!
A
cloth diaper tote is also good to have so that when you are out and about you have something to put wet diapers in. Cloth diaper totes are waterproof so they will keep the diaper bag from getting wet. We suggest having two in case you need to go out of the house twice before you wash diapers.

Someone told me they strip their diapers and I should too. What is that and why do I need to do that?
W
hen using a diaper with a fleece lining, they sometimes will get coated with the detergent you are using, or if you use a fabric softener (we do not recommend use of fabric softeners on diapers, it can hinder absorbency). This coating, which is invisible, but really annoying, can cause your fleece to repel the urine instead of wicking (sucking it) it into the insert (the inside of the diaper). This repelling can cause the urine to leak out of the legs of the diaper, making some new moms think that their diaper is not absorbent enough or that they are not working. If you think this is your problem, you can look at the bottom of our
diaper care page to see how to strip your diapers.

How do I care for my diapers?
We send out instructions with your order of diapers, but you can also find instructions on how to care for your diapers on our Diaper Care page.
