Pocket Diapers & All In Ones
-Store in dry pail, knocking off older babies solids before putting them in the pail. No need to shake out insert, we have found they usually come out with the agitation of the washer. - Wash with one half to one fourth of the detergent you would use with your clothes. We have used Allens Naturally, Sun, Purex, Tide, and Arm and Hammer without having any problems with our dipes. We wash on cold which helps save on utility costs. -Dry on the line, or in the dryer. High heat can be used, but we personally use low heat for about 35 minutes and it seems to dry our pockets just fine. More time may be needed for All In Ones.
Sherpa Fitted Diapers
Wash new diapers before use. You may notice that they produce a bit of lint in the beginning, this is normal for Sherpa.
- Cold rinse - warm-hot wash - No chlorine, no bleach, no fabric softners. - May be dried on high heat.
Occasionally you may notice that your Sherpa diapers are not as soft after a few months of use as they were when new. All you need to do is rinse the diapers a few times in the washer without detergent. Add vinegar to the rinse cycle. This will help to restore the natural softness to the Sherpa.
Hemp Products & Unbleached Natural Prefolds
You will need to wash and dry your hemp products and unbleached prefolds 2-3 times before using them to remove the natural oils on them. They will start out flat, but with a few washes they will start to puff and get soft. This will continue for 5-8 washes. This being said, do not wash it with any fleece until the oils are gone, as it can coat the fleece, making the fleece not able to absorb.
Wool Covers and Products
Handwashing is the best way to go with wool. Wash wool in COLD water with the wool wash of your choice. Roll the cover in a towel to remove all the excess water, and lay flat to dry. If you buy a wool wash with the Lanolin in it already, you do not have to worry about lanolizing you diaper cover after you wash it. NEVER put wool in the dryer, as it will cause it to shrink far beyond a usable size! (Think doll diapers)
In a Stink! If your diapers stink, place a downy ball with vinegar in it into your wash. You may also use Baking soda.
To "Strip" your diapers, you can do one of two things. -soak in oxi-clean overnight and then wash. -Or you may run a cycle with the full a mount of recommended detergent on HOT, then rinse in cold until you see no bubbles in the rinse cycle. Dry as you normally would.
If you have any diaper care questions that are not covered here, please contact me so I can help you with your question.
Wondering what detergent to use? We have used many different detergents over the years. Ones that we have used personally with our diapers and have worked are Arm and Hammer, Purex, Tide, & Allen's Naturally. We have never had a problem with any of these ruining our diapers. We DO NOT recommend using oxi-clean in your normal wash routine, we used the Arm and Hammer with Oxi Clean for about two weeks and it damaged the elastic in our diapers.
